Monthly Loon Activity Report—Lake Winnipesaukee

Please fill out this form once per month, at the end of the month, from May (or whenever you arrive at the lake for the summer) through August. Please use this form to summarize the activity that you have seen on your part of the lake over the course of the month—how many loons are residents there? This estimate should reflect how many loons are present on an average day We consider a loon to be resident if it is present on your part of the lake more often than not.

We currently divide Lake Winnipesaukee into over 40 occupied or potential loon monitoring territories. This form will ask you to select which territory you are reporting from. If you are not sure of our name for your part of the lake, please find it on the map below. If you have any questions, please email winni@loon.org or volunteers@loon.org.

Loon Volunteer Monthly Report—Lake WInnipesaukee

This form is designed for volunteers on Lake Winnipesaukee to submit monthly loon observations from a specific loon territory. If you're not sure of the name of your territory, please see the map above. The information that you provide on this form should represent resident loon activity—the numbers should reflect how many loons live on your territory, to the best of your knowledge. Please do not include visiting loons—those you've seen only occasionally—in the data submitted on this form.

Number of paired adult loons(Required)

Please enter the number of adult loons that were on your part of the lake that were part of a pair. One loon pair= 2 paired adults. Please include only resident loons (those that were present on the territory more often than not). If your territory does not have a resident pair, enter '0'. Most territories should have either 0 or 2 paired adult loons.

Number of unpaired adults(Required)

Please enter the number of loons that were on your territory that were NOT part of a pair. Please include only those loons that you consider to be residents on your territory (birds that were present on your territory more often than not). If your territory did not have any unpaired adult loons, please enter '0'.

Number of Loon Chicks

Were loon chicks (young of the year) present on your loon territory this past month? If so, how many?

Did you see any banded loons on your territory?

LPC has banded many loons throughout New Hampshire. Bands are placed on the loon's legs—you may see them while a loon is preening, or if it approaches you closely.

Please describe the colors that you saw

If you know which leg you saw which colors on, please include that information as well. LPC usually puts 2 bands on each leg.

Please list any other information you think we should know about the loon activity on your lake over the past month.

This can include things like: Do other loons visit your lake regularly, but not often enough to be considered residents on your lake? If so, how many visitors are you seeing, and how often are they on your lake? Did any hatched chicks disappear? If so, what do you think was the cause of their disappearance? Are there any threats to the loons on your territory that we should be aware of? Etc.

Please provide more information about how many pairs of loons nested on your territory.

Number of Nest Attempts(Required)

Please list how many nest attempts you are aware of on your territory from April-present. Note: Nest building alone is not considered a nest attempt—the loons must sit on the nest consistently for at least 3 days in order to count .

Nest attempt check

It is highly unusual for a loon pair to nest 5 times or more within a single season. Are you certain all of these nest attempts were legitimate (that at least one egg was laid for each nest attempt)? Please provide any relevant information about each nest attempt.
