Running Aground
As a postlude to the Circle Dancing post, we got a report of a beached loon on our Loon Cam pond later in the day of the visiting loon. By the time anyone could respond the loon had gotten back into the water and was nowhere to be found.
That’s a pretty common occurrence when a third loon confronts a nesting pair. What likely happened after the visitor left the field of view of the camera is that there was a serious chase, possibly a loon on loon fight, and the visitor had no choice but to climb up on land to get away from the resident.
More often than not, the beached loon can wait awhile and then sneak off to a safer area but occasionally they are so traumatized that we have to go rescue them and move them to a safer lake.
