Unattended Eggs
The pair has settled into a two shift schedule. Dad takes the day shift and mom takes the night shift. Last night, after a busy fourth of July with a lot of boating activity on the lake, mom was late for her shift and dad had enough and took of in search of her.
Mom showed up about 40 minutes later, still a little reluctant to climb onto the nest, and she was accompanied by a barrage of fireworks. Was it all the human activity on the lake that had kept her away? We can’t say for sure, but experience tells us that the Fourth of July can be a trying time for loons.
