LPC Volunteer Resources

Thank you for volunteering with the Loon Preservation Committee. LPC volunteers play many important roles, from reporting loon observations, to providing updates on nesting activity and chick survival, to helping to float nest rafts and signs, to being a friendly presence that our Field Biologists can depend on out on the lake. We would not be able to do our work without you. We appreciate each and every hour of time that you spend to help the loons on your lake(s).

This page includes convenient online forms to report loon activity and contact information for LPC. We hope to continue updating this page to be more useful to our volunteers, and we welcome feedback and suggestions.

Reporting Loon Activity

Monthly Volunteer Report

This year, we are asking all of our volunteers to submit monthly reports of the loon activity on their loon territory. These reports should be submitted once per month, at the end of the month, and should summarize the loon activity that you’ve seen—how many resident loons did the territory have, on average, over the course of the month? Thank you for helping us keep track of the loon activity on your lake.

Submit Monthly Loon Data

Report a Loon Nest

In addition to reporting a summary of loon activity on a monthly basis, this year we are asking our volunteers to submit a report whenever they find a loon nest. This report should be submitted on a rolling basis, ideally on the same day that you find the nest. This will help to keep our biologist as up-to-date as possible with the nesting activity on the lake & gives you an opportunity to report any concerns that you have about the nest.

Contacting LPC

During our monitoring season (late May–mid August), it is best to reach out to our Sunapee Field Biologist directly with any reports, questions, or concerns. LPC’s 2024 Sunapee Biologist is Leo Duktewych. To contact Leo directly, please email sunapee@loon.org. Outside of the summer season, sunapee@loon.org forwards to year-round field staff. Please continue to use that email for reports, questions, or concerns.

If you have a loon emergency (an injured loon, a nest that you feel is at immediate risk of failing, or a dead loon that needs to be collected) and you can’t get through to the Sunapee Field Biologist, please call us at (603)476-5666 during standard operating hours (Monday–Saturday, 9 AM-5 PM). Outside of those hours, you will get the quickest response by using our online Loon In Distress Reporting Form.
