n 2015, a loon from Lake Umbagog in New Hampshire became the first ever loon documented to have died from avian malaria. In the years since, a handful of other loons in New England have died from malaria. Previous studies over thirty years had showed Common Loons to be free of malaria parasite infection. The threat of this newly emerging disease, malaria, in Common Loons is being studied by Dr. Ellen Martinsen and her students at the University of Vermont. In this talk, Ellen will explain her current work to investigate this emerging, potentially climate-related disease.
