Each year, LPC hosts an annual Loon Census to monitor New Hampshire’s loons and their progress on lakes throughout the state. The invaluable data gathered from census observations are used as:
- a mid-season check on productivity
- a mechanism for discovering unknown loons in each territory
- a means to track movement of loons and define relationships between neighboring pairs
- a community-based tool for generating interest and involvement in loons
The 2024 Loon Census will be held on Saturday, July 20 from 8–9 AM. To participate, simply visit your local lake during this time period and count how many loons you see (tallying adults and chicks separately). Because the goal is to generate a ‘snapshot in time’ of New Hampshire’s loon population, observations must be made during the specified time period (8–9 AM on July 20th, 2024) in order to be counted in our census data. If possible, please try to lay eyes on all parts of the lake during the time period, either by boating/kayaking around the shoreline, or if surveying from land, by looking from as many vantage points as possible in order to see every part of the lake/pond. If you have any questions about participation in the census, or if you would like to volunteer with LPC outside of the census, please email volunteers@loon.org.
